Abstract

This study examines the role and innovation of the kafalah contract in enhancing the competitiveness of Islamic financial products within the rapidly evolving financial sector. The research aims to identify how kafalah can strengthen risk mitigation, expand access to financing, and support the development of inclusive and efficient sharia-compliant financial services. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes classical jurisprudential concepts, regulatory standards, and contemporary practices in Islamic financial institutions. Data were collected through literature review of academic works, regulatory documents, and institutional reports related to kafalah implementation in banking, microfinance, and digital financial platforms. The findings reveal that kafalah remains a relevant guarantee instrument, especially in supporting MSMEs that lack conventional collateral. Innovations such as digital kafalah, blockchain-based verification, integration with other contracts, and community-based guarantee schemes significantly improve service efficiency, minimize operational risks, and enhance customer trust. These innovations also demonstrate strong alignment with sharia objectives by promoting fairness, transparency, and financial inclusion. The study concludes that optimizing kafalah innovation can substantially strengthen the competitive advantage of Islamic financial institutions, provided that regulatory support, technological readiness, and cross-sector collaboration are effectively developed.
