English Education: English Journal for Teaching and Learning is committed to promoting ethical research practices and protecting the rights, dignity, safety, and well-being of research participants. The journal requires authors to ensure that research involving human participants complies with applicable ethical standards and institutional regulations. Where required, ethical approval must be obtained from an appropriate institutional ethics review board or ethics committee before data collection begins.
1. Requirement for Ethical Clearance
Authors must obtain ethical approval from an appropriate institutional ethics review board, research ethics committee, or other competent authority before conducting research involving:
-
Human participants, including students, teachers, interviewees, and survey respondents.
-
Personal, sensitive, or identifiable information.
-
Educational interventions, experimental instruction, or classroom-based research involving human participants.
Authors must include an ethical approval statement in their manuscripts, specifying the name of the approving institution and the approval reference number, where applicable. If ethical approval is not required under the relevant institutional or national guidelines, authors should provide an appropriate explanation.
2. Informed Consent
Authors must ensure that research participants receive clear information about the purpose of the study, their participation, potential risks and benefits, the use and storage of their data, and their right to decline participation or withdraw in accordance with the study's approved procedures.
Informed consent must be obtained before participation. Written consent should be obtained where appropriate and required by applicable ethical guidelines. For research involving minors, permission from parents or legal guardians and the assent of the minors must be obtained when required.
Authors must indicate in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained, where applicable.
3. Data Privacy and Confidentiality
Authors are responsible for protecting the privacy and confidentiality of research participants throughout the research process. Data must be collected, stored, processed, and reported in accordance with applicable data protection regulations and ethical requirements.
Personally identifiable information should be removed, anonymized, or securely protected unless disclosure is ethically justified and explicit consent has been obtained where required. Authors must take appropriate measures to prevent unauthorized access to research data.
4. Manuscripts Without Formal Ethical Approval
If formal ethical review was unavailable or not required for a particular study, authors must explain the circumstances in the manuscript and demonstrate how the research complied with relevant ethical principles.
Such explanations should address, where applicable, voluntary participation, informed consent, confidentiality, data protection, and the minimization of potential harm. An ethical self-assessment does not automatically replace formal ethical approval when such approval is required by institutional regulations or applicable standards.
The editorial board reserves the right to request additional documentation or clarification regarding ethical compliance. Manuscripts that do not adequately address relevant ethical requirements may be rejected.
5. Ethical Responsibility in Publication
Authors, reviewers, and editors share responsibility for maintaining ethical standards throughout the publication process. The editorial board will investigate credible concerns regarding unethical research practices and take appropriate action in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies. Such action may include requesting clarification, rejecting a manuscript, issuing a correction, or retracting a published article when warranted.
For further inquiries regarding ethical clearance requirements, authors may contact the editorial office of English Education: English Journal for Teaching and Learning through the official contact information provided on the journal's website.
