Singing as a Mnemonic Strategy for Learning Mathematical Formulas at SDI Abu Seno, Bandung City

Abstract


This study aims to analyse the use of singing as a mnemonic strategy in learning mathematical formulae at SDI Abu Seno, Bandung City. The focus of the study is directed towards the forms of singing used in learning, students’ responses, and the function of singing in helping students remember mathematical formulae. This research employed a qualitative approach with a field study design. Data were collected through classroom observation, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation in the form of song lyrics, learning notes, and students’ practice work. The data were analysed through the stages of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings show that singing is used at the beginning and during the main learning activities as a way to prepare the class and as a learning aid to help students remember formulae, particularly in the topic of area and perimeter of plane shapes. Students responded positively because the learning process became more enjoyable, active, and easier to follow. Singing functions as a mnemonic strategy through lyrics, rhythm, and repetition, which help students recall mathematical formulae. However, singing still needs to be supported by conceptual explanation and practice exercises so that students do not merely memorise formulae, but are also able to use them appropriately.
