Relasi Otoritas dan Keteladanan dalam Komunikasi Kiai-Santri
Abstract
Abstract
This study investigates how the authority of a kiai and his personal exemplary behavior operate as integrated modes of communication within the traditional Islamic boarding school (pesantren). Using a qualitative approach with ethnography of communication, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation at a pesantren salafiyah. The findings show that kiai authority is constructed through a combination of deep religious knowledge, ritual structures, spatial arrangements, symbolic actions, and consistent moral conduct. Santri responses to kiai authority vary from total acceptance to critical negotiation, influenced by educational background, length of stay, organizational experience, and personal proximity to the kiai. The study also reveals that exemplary behavior serves as a powerful non-verbal communication mode that shapes santri understanding, attitudes, and daily practices through observation, imitation, and internalization of values. Furthermore, the kiai integrates scholarly authority with personal example through symbolic communication, dialogic teaching, emotional closeness, storytelling, participatory activities, and constructive corrective communication. These strategies create a holistic pedagogical environment that strengthens moral, intellectual, and behavioral development. The study concludes that the kiai–santri relationship forms a dynamic, multidimensional structure of authority that is adaptive to modern challenges while remaining rooted in Islamic tradition. This research contributes to the theoretical development of Islamic communication models by highlighting the central role of exemplary practice in sustaining the legitimacy and relevance of religious authority.
