Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in DARUL ILMI: Jurnal Ilmu Kependidikan dan Keislaman

1. Overview and Core Principles

DARUL ILMI: Jurnal Ilmu Kependidikan dan Keislaman recognizes the rapid development and increasing application of artificial intelligence (AI), generative AI, and AI-assisted technologies in academic research and scholarly publishing.

AI technologies, including Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other AI-powered applications, may support researchers in improving academic writing, language editing, literature exploration, data processing, and research efficiency.

However, the journal emphasizes that AI technologies must be used responsibly, ethically, transparently, and under appropriate human supervision.

Artificial intelligence cannot replace human critical thinking, academic judgment, methodological expertise, intellectual originality, or scholarly accountability.

In the fields of Islamic education, educational sciences, and Islamic studies, particular attention must be given to the accuracy of religious sources, the authenticity of Qur'anic verses and Hadith references, the validity of scholarly interpretations, and the reliability of research findings.

Authors, reviewers, and editors remain fully responsible for their academic and ethical obligations, regardless of whether AI-assisted technologies are used.

This policy follows relevant recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

2. Policy for Authors

A. Authorship and Accountability

1. No AI Authorship

Artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other generative AI systems, do not qualify for authorship.

AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot fulfill the responsibilities associated with scholarly authorship, including approving the final manuscript, declaring conflicts of interest, accepting legal responsibility, and ensuring research integrity.

All listed authors must be human researchers who meet the journal's applicable authorship criteria.

2. Human Responsibility and Oversight

Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, validity, reliability, and ethical integrity of their manuscripts, including any content generated or modified with AI assistance.

Authors must carefully review, verify, and edit AI-generated content before incorporating it into their manuscripts.

AI-generated content may contain inaccurate information, fabricated references, misleading interpretations, biased statements, or unsupported academic claims.

Authors must independently verify all factual statements, theoretical arguments, bibliographic references, statistical results, and research interpretations.

3. Academic Integrity and Originality

The use of AI must not compromise the originality or scientific contribution of submitted manuscripts.

Authors are prohibited from using AI to fabricate research data, generate fictitious findings, manipulate evidence, create nonexistent references, or misrepresent research procedures.

AI-assisted writing must not be used to conceal plagiarism, misrepresent authorship contributions, or substitute for the authors' independent scholarly analysis.

4. Responsibility for Islamic Sources

Authors using AI-assisted technologies in Islamic education and Islamic studies must verify the authenticity and accuracy of Qur'anic quotations, Hadith texts, translations, interpretations, and references to Islamic scholarly literature.

AI-generated references to religious texts, classical Islamic scholarship, and contemporary academic studies must be checked against reliable primary or authoritative scholarly sources.

AI-generated religious interpretations must not be presented as authoritative scholarly conclusions without appropriate verification and academic justification.

B. Disclosure and Transparency

1. Mandatory Disclosure of Substantive AI Use

Authors must transparently disclose the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies that materially contribute to manuscript preparation, data collection, analysis, interpretation, or content generation.

The disclosure must identify the AI tool used and explain the purpose and nature of its application.

2. Permitted Uses

Authors may use AI-assisted technologies for legitimate research-support activities, provided that the resulting content is independently verified and the use complies with this policy.

Examples include:

  • Improving academic language, clarity, and readability.
  • Assisting with manuscript organization and preliminary drafting.
  • Supporting literature exploration and research planning.
  • Assisting with programming, coding, or technical data processing.
  • Supporting the analysis of research materials when scientifically appropriate.
  • Assisting with translation, subject to verification of meaning, terminology, and contextual accuracy.

The use of AI does not relieve authors of their responsibility to verify sources, ensure methodological rigor, and maintain academic originality.

3. Exceptions for Basic Language Tools

Routine spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic formatting tools generally do not require a specific AI declaration when they do not substantially generate, transform, or alter the intellectual content of the manuscript.

However, AI-assisted rewriting, generation of substantive paragraphs, interpretation of data, production of analytical content, or other meaningful intellectual assistance must be disclosed.

4. Mandatory AI Declaration Statement

Authors who use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in preparing their manuscripts must include a declaration before the References section.

The declaration should follow this format:

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [NAME OF AI TOOL/SERVICE] for [SPECIFIC PURPOSE, such as improving academic readability, assisting with data analysis, supporting coding, or preparing preliminary text]. All AI-assisted outputs were critically reviewed, verified, and edited by the author(s). The author(s) take(s) full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and final content of this publication.

When AI technologies are used as part of the research methodology, authors must also describe their application in the Methods section, including relevant information about the tools, procedures, analytical processes, and verification methods.

Authors who do not use generative AI in preparing their manuscripts are not required to provide an AI-use declaration unless otherwise requested by the editorial team.

C. Use of AI in Research Data and Analysis

The use of artificial intelligence in research data collection, processing, coding, or analysis must follow established principles of methodological transparency, data integrity, and research ethics.

Authors must:

  1. Clearly describe the AI tools used in the research methodology.
  2. Explain how the AI-assisted procedures contribute to the research objectives.
  3. Verify the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated analytical outputs.
  4. Ensure that AI-assisted analysis does not fabricate or distort research findings.
  5. Protect confidential research data and personal information.
  6. Avoid uploading sensitive information about students, teachers, research participants, or educational institutions into AI platforms without appropriate authorization and data protection safeguards.
  7. Maintain sufficient methodological documentation to support the reproducibility or auditability of the research where feasible.

AI-assisted analysis must remain subject to appropriate human interpretation and scientific evaluation.

D. Use of AI in Figures, Images, and Illustrations

The generation or substantial alteration of research images, scientific figures, or evidentiary visual materials through generative AI is generally prohibited unless the use of AI is an explicitly justified component of the research design or methodology.

When AI-generated images or other visual materials constitute legitimate research data or analytical objects, authors must clearly describe the technology and procedures used.

Authors must not use generative AI to fabricate research evidence, alter experimental results, manipulate documentation, or misrepresent educational observations.

Any permitted AI-generated visual content must comply with applicable copyright, intellectual property, research ethics, and transparency requirements.

3. Policy for Peer Reviewers
